STRAIN TRAITS
Details
Purple Urkle gained infamy in the 1980s before becoming a popular medicinal strain in the mid-90s. Its roots go back to northern California’s iconic Emerald Triangle region, a breeder’s utopia famed for producing some of the world’s best strains. The precise heritage of Purple Urkle is a little hazy, but we know it can trace its parentage back to the esteemed Mendocino Purps. Delve deeper, and you’ll find a proud lineage that contains strains such as Granddaddy Purple and Grape Ape.
This is a well-rounded hybrid with indica leanings. It produces a blissfully relaxing high that’s perfectly suited to medicinal as well as recreational use. Purple Urkle is a moderately difficult grow, but one that rewards your efforts with truly high-quality buds.
Effects
Purple Urkle’s THC levels of around 15-18% are mid-range, but its effects are nothing but full-bodied. Thanks to a decent amount of sativa in its genes, this strain produces a high that’s emotionally invigorating and euphoric. But the indica wins through. Rather than provide a burst of energy, Purple Urkle swaddles you in warmth and lowers you to a state of utmost physical relaxation. The buzz is deep and bodily, coming on very quickly without feeling overpowering. A contented sense of lethargy is common, making this a strain best reserved for evening and nighttime use.
As such, Purple Urkle is a superb treatment for insomnia. The largely physical nature of its high means it’s also effective at combatting pain; fibromyalgia, migraines, muscle spasms, and joint pain are all regularly treated using this strain. Its relaxing properties are also great for treating conditions like stress and anxiety.
Growing
The one downside of Purple Urkle is that it’s not the easiest strain to grow. But it’s not the hardest either, and if you put the effort in, you’ll be rewarded handsomely. Plants grow to heights of around 100-180cm and generally produce yields between 400-500g/m2.
Interestingly, Purple Urkle is one of the few strains that tend to produce higher yields if grown inside. If you do opt for the indoors, plants will flower in around 10-12 weeks. And while it might not yield quite as much, this strain can still thrive outdoors. If you do grow Purple Urkle outside, it will be ready for harvest in early October.
Appearance & Aroma
In appearance, Purple Urkle is a typical indica. Plants are short and stocky with thick, strong stems. Broad fan leaves develop around the base of the plant with buds forming higher up on the main stem. It’s common for both buds and leaves to display vibrant indigo hues, with shades becoming deeper as plants mature.
In terms of structure, buds are dense and conical. Luscious green in color, they contrast pleasingly against tangerine-colored pistils and a dusting of white trichomes. Plants emit a fragrance that’s both earth and fruity. Even during the growth phase, they produce a scent that carries unmistakable notes of grape. This aroma intensifies as they grow, providing a preview of the delectable Purple Urkle flavor.
MSNL Editors Verdict
Purple Urkle is a gorgeous smoke. Its supremely relaxing, body-melting high is matched only by its sumptuous, fruity flavor. You don’t become a revered medicinal strain by accident. And this beautifully-balanced hybrid produces a buzz so soothing that its popularity seems inevitable.
The only downside is that it’s not the easiest to cultivate. We wouldn’t recommend it unless you’ve already completed one or two successful grows. But the good news is that that’s all it takes. Just a little bit of experience is enough to master this strain and grow yourself something truly special.
Tasting Notes
Unsmoked, buds of Purple Urkle have a distinctly tropical aroma. Tropical fruits, berries, and grape merge pleasingly, underscored by notes of skunk. The overarching fragrance is fresh and inviting.
When smoked, the berry and grape flavors really come to the fore, with some users likening the taste to grape soda. It’s delightfully sweet, with thick smoke taking on a sugary quality as you exhale. Hints of skunk and earthiness underpin this sweetness, rounding off the iconic Purple Urkle flavor.
